The Pygora goat is a lovely fibre from a great lovable animal. The animal is shorn twice a year, and whereas you might obtain up to 2 lbs of fibre from the animal with the shearing, you lose a great deal in the processing because the animal has a double coat, one of which is the more prominent colour which is the guard hair. So the end result is a fine fibre and a pale version in colour of the photo of the animal.
Mary Donaty and her husband, breed Pygora goats, Llamas and Alpacas on their farm in Clinton, USA. Each shearing is lovingly handled and the resulting fibre is a rare luxury! We are honoured and privileged to be able to bring you this divine yarn.
INFORMATION ON PYGORA FIBRE TYPES
The Pygora is a fleece producing goat. As more animals were bred, it was noted that the fibre ranged from long and lustrous mohair, to short extremely fine cashmere. Three types of Pygoras were soon classified according to their fleece types.
Fleece types
Type A or Angora Type is up to 6 inches long, lustrous, should hang in long curly locks, and be free of guard hair. These goats usually need to be shorn 2 times a year.
Type B or Blend Type fibre is curly and may be lustrous or have a matte finish. It is between 3-6 inches long and there are fine guard hairs. These goats may be shorn, plucked, or combed.
Type C or Cashmere Type fibre is 1 to 3 inches in length, is 14 to 19 microns in diameter, has a matt finish, very little curl, and the guard hairs are coarse and distinct. These goats can be shorn, plucked or combed.
Colour
Pygoras come in all accepted colours of the Pygmy goat, dilutions of those, and white. Most Pygoras have seasonal colours, their fleece being a lighter colour than their guard hair. A black goat in summer may change to a grey goat in winter.
